ADHD Therapy and Treatment for Adults

Is ADHD Running the Show Even When You Are the Showrunner? Feeling Exhausted While Others Think You Have It All Together?
When Trying Hard Is Never Quite Enough
Are you constantly trying to stay on top of things, work, home life, and still feeling off balance? Not organized enough, wanting more for yourself but having trouble staying ahead of the clutter, both the literal kind and the kind that fills your head. Day to day life is sometimes manageable but often not. You are forgetful despite trying hard not to be. You may have even stopped trying in some areas because it is just too exhausting. And the hardest part is that others cannot see how hard you are working. You may be succeeding in some areas, which makes it even harder to understand. How can you be great at work but struggling at home, or the other way around?
Perhaps you are tired of feeling scattered, overwhelmed, or misunderstood. Your relationships, work, or self-confidence suffer when you miss deadlines or forget important details. You have tried different planners, calendars, and reminder systems. Some work for a while but ultimately they stop working. You are drawn to new things, but routine is rarely bright and shiny enough to hold your attention. And that is exactly where your phone pulls you in, and not in a good way.
Too Much or Not Enough. Sometimes Both.
It is common for adults with ADHD to feel exhausted at the end of the day, frustrated with themselves, and unable to show up in relationships the way they would like. Some people with ADHD cringe when they think back to old report cards that said they did not apply themselves. Over time that adds up. You start to feel like you are not enough. And yet other times you may have gotten the opposite message, that you are too much, too intense. The truth is no two people with ADHD are alike. If you have met one person with ADHD then you have met one person with ADHD. We show up very differently.
Whether ADHD is something you are newly considering or you have been aware of this old friend for most of your life, you do not have to go it alone. You are worthy of caring attention. With the right ADHD therapy and treatment for adults it is possible to discover new ways to manage your symptoms, reconnect with your strengths, and let go of shame.
You Are Not Alone. ADHD Is Common and Often Overlooked. So Why Does ADHD Feel So Isolating?
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects millions of adults, yet it is often misunderstood or minimized. In the United States about 6% of adults are living with ADHD and many more go undiagnosed for years. To put that in perspective, if you filled Lumen Field in Seattle to capacity, roughly 4,140 of those fans would have ADHD. You are far from alone.
The Hidden Cost of Living With ADHD
People with ADHD are often dealing with increased stress from time management difficulties. That stress bleeds into relationships. Over a lifetime it builds into a constant worry that you are letting people down, that you will be seen as thoughtless or selfish, when really you are just wired differently.
There is even something people call the ADHD tax. Replacing a lost phone, a missing wallet, an ID card that has disappeared again. These are a constant grinding drain on your time, your money, and your confidence. And because your stress is already high, emotional regulation is genuinely harder for ADHD brains. More stress means less regulation. Less regulation means more shame.
The good news is that specialized ADHD therapy and treatment for adults can make a real difference, especially when you work with someone who truly understands neurodivergent minds. Not every therapist who works with ADHD has spent decades living it and studying it. I can help you start to understand your own brain, build strategies that actually work, and let go of the shame that has built up over the years.
How My ADHD Therapy and Treatment Approach Can Help You Build a More Manageable Life
What Makes My Approach to ADHD Treatment for Adults Different?
I know that living with ADHD is about so much more than just trying harder or staying organized. My goal is to help you understand how your brain works so we can separate what is truly ADHD from what might be rooted in shame, self-doubt, or old patterns that no longer serve you.
Many adults with ADHD carry deep shame built up over a lifetime of feeling not enough, or alternatively too much for the people around them. This makes it hard to connect with others and even harder to connect with themselves. A big part of my work is creating a space where that protective wall can come down safely.
When that happens something remarkable occurs. I have seen it hundreds of times. Their eyes sparkle. There is a moment of genuine acceptance, maybe one of the first they have allowed themselves to feel in years. That is the moment I am working toward. And then we practice it so it grows. They begin to feel more confident and more caring toward themselves and others, and that starts to show up outside of my office doors too.
What to Expect in ADHD Therapy
ADHD therapy sessions are tailored to you. Here is what that looks like in practice:
-
Clear, Compassionate Education: Understanding the science behind ADHD so you can finally make sense of your experiences and let go of self-blame.
-
Practical Tools That Fit Your Brain: Strategies for time management, emotional regulation, and reducing overwhelm, built around how your mind actually works.
-
Mindfulness and Present Moment Awareness: Using these tools to help calm an overstimulated nervous system and feel more centered and regulated day to day.
-
Resilience and Self-Compassion: Because strategies alone are not enough, I will support you in building the inner resources to keep going, even when things get tough.
Integrating CIMBS and Interpersonal Neurobiology
I also incorporate Complex Integration of Multiple Brain Systems (CIMBS), which draws from interpersonal neurobiology. This approach goes beyond talk therapy and is particularly well suited for ADHD treatment for adults. You can learn more about CIMBS and how it works on my CIMBS page.
Assessment and Evaluation
As a licensed psychologist I offer comprehensive ADHD assessments and evaluations. If you have been wondering for years whether ADHD explains your experience I can help you find that clarity. Sometimes just having a name for what you have been living with is its own kind of relief. It is also important to know whether there is something more going on. In the ADHD world we call these traveling companions. Anxiety, depression, and addiction often show up alongside ADHD and knowing the full picture makes a real difference in how we work together.
My Commitment to You
I have been providing ADHD therapy and ADHD treatment for adults for over 20 years, and I have ADHD myself. I know what it is like to sit with a nervous system that does not quiet down easily. I know what it is like to work hard and still feel like you are falling behind. That shared experience shapes how I show up for my clients. At the same time my experience is not your experience. ADHD people are not carbon copies of each other. Some of us are highly inattentive and not hyperactive at all. Others need to be constantly moving and there is so much in between. My approach is always built around you and your unique version of ADHD.
Common Questions About ADHD Therapy and Treatment
What if I've tried therapy before and it didn't help?
A lot of my clients have been through therapy that did not fit. Standard approaches often miss what ADHD clients actually need, which is active engagement, real connection, and strategies designed for how their brain works. My ADHD therapy approach is different. We will find what works for you.
How do I know if I really have ADHD?
If you recognize yourself in what you have read here that is worth paying attention to. I can offer a thorough ADHD assessment to help you understand what is going on and get a clear picture of next steps.
Is ADHD therapy worth the time and investment?
Learning to work with your brain rather than against it changes things. Relationships, routines, how you feel about yourself. Many clients find that ADHD treatment for adults pays off in ways that extend well beyond the therapy room.
Can ADHD therapy help with anxiety or depression?
Yes. Anxiety and depression are among the most common traveling companions of ADHD. Addressing the ADHD and the shame that has grown around it tends to help with both.
